Free ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 drivers for Linux x86. Found 5 files. Select driver to download. It has an integrated and a dedicated graphics card, the latter is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650. The installation of Elementary OS (Luna) went fine but I needed hardware acceleration, so I tried to install ATI drivers from the system settings.

I'm very new to Linux and I'm trying to bring some new life into an old imac (mid-2006). Everything is working fine, except for the ATI Radeon Mobility x1600. I understand the driver is now open source as ATI/AMD has discontinued the driver, however even when the open source driver is installed by default it doesn't seem to work, at least the way I'm understanding. The only way I can boot any distro at all is by using the 'nomodeset', 'radeon.dpm=0' or similar tags. Do these tags turn off hardware acceleration? Is it actually using the radeon open source drivers or just using default graphics drivers when using these tags? Also, is this the only way to use this video card with linux, or am I doing something wrong?
